International Day of the Girl

On October 11th, the world pauses to reflect on girls. On their dreams, their strength, and their right to a safe future. For me, this is no ordinary day.

I am a mother, I am a woman, and I was once a girl myself who had to learn to believe in her own potential. Perhaps you recognize that. That is why today I want to share why this day is so close to the heart of La Luz Lifestyle.

What is the International Day of the Girl?

The United Nations designated October 11th as the International Day of the Girl.

Since 2012, this day has been dedicated every year to the rights of girls worldwide.

Millions of girls still do not have the same opportunities. They are denied an education, forced into child marriage, or are not safe. This day calls for attention to them, while simultaneously celebrating the immense strength within all girls.

Why this day suits

La Luz

La Luz means "the light." It is that light that I want to pass on to women and children through jewelry and gifts that carry meaning. A bracelet with a positive message is small, but it can provide that extra boost on a difficult day.

La Luz was born in Aruba, when I saw at the food bank how deeply children were being affected. Since then, everything I create revolves around the same thing: letting girls and women feel that they are strong and that they matter.

Supporting Free a Girl for years

For several years now, La Luz Lifestyle has been a supporter of Free a Girl. This organization works to combat the sexual exploitation of girls and helps them on their path toward a safe future.

The Free a Girl bracelet features the text She believed she could, so she did. That phrase captures exactly what this day is all about: believing in yourself, even when the world makes it difficult.

For me, this isn't just a one-day campaign. It is part of who La Luz is: a brand that wants to help girls and women shine.

What you can do on October 11th

You don't have to do big things to make a girl shine. Here are a few ideas:

  • Say it out loud. Tell your daughter, niece, or friend what you see in her. Not how she looks, but who she is.
  • Write a note. A short message in a lunchbox or bag can leave a lasting impression.
  • Give something with meaning. A bracelet with a positive text reminds her of her own strength every day.
  • Share this day. Celebrate a girl or woman who inspires you on social media.
  • Support those who protect girls. Take a look at the Free a Girl website to see the work they do.

Let her light shine

Every girl deserves to be told that she is good just the way she is. On October 11th, and every other day of the year.

Would you like to give a girl or woman in your life something to remind her of that? Take a look at our bracelets and the Kids Collection. Each piece of jewelry carries a positive message.

With love,

Vanessa
